The first poll for the 2016 New Zealand local elections has revealed veteran Labour MP and former leader Phil Goff has a sizable lead over potential Right-wing mayoral candidates John Banks and Cameron Brewer.
John Banks, former National Party minister, ACT MP and Auckland City Mayor is the favourite for the Right polling at 8%.
Cameron Brewer, a Right-wing councilor, has support of 5% of enrolled voters and 3% of not-yet enrolled voters.
Maurice Williamson, generally viewed as a ‘middle of the road’ National MP is in a surprise third with support from up to 7% of Aucklanders.
Other plausible right-leaning candidates such as Affordable Auckland leader Stephen Berry and Michael Barnett have left the vote for the Right fractured.
Meanwhile less Centre-left candidates means Goff has a sizable lead, dwarfing his opponents with up to 23% support.
Undecided or non-committed voters is at 28%.
Support for incumbent Mayor Len Brown is on 5%, and Goff will not be drawn on whether or not he supports the Labour member as a Mayor.
Other left-leaning candidates such as Penny Hulse manage 4%, and veteran anti-corruption activist Penny Bright has 3% support. MANA Movement activist John Minto is on 2%.
